Mental Health Treatment in Minnesota

Minnesota has a growing mental health illness rate that needs to become a priority for the residents who live here. While many mental health disorders can be treated, many people decide not to partake in treatment, which can make the illness worse overall.

It is estimated that closer to 3.9% of adults in the state of Minnesota are dealing with a severe mental health disorder like bipolar disorder. There are also many more who are suffering from a less severe mental health disorder who will also need to get the necessary mental health treatment in Minnesota before the condition gets worse.

With numbers as high as they are in the state of Minnesota for mental health conditions, patients need to consider seeking out treatment. However, only 50% of adults with a mental illness will seek out any form of treatment. While Minnesota is ranked 5 out of 50 for providing these services to individuals, many choose not to seek them out or get help at all. This can make it easier for the mental illness to get worse.

What Kind of Mental Health Treatment is Available in Minnesota?

Patients who need help with a mental health condition will be able to find a number of treatment services available in the state of Minnesota. The exact type that they need to choose will depend on the exact mental health condition they have and the security of that issues as well. Some of the most common types of treatment a patient can choose include:

  1. Inpatient rehab: This is often reserved for those with the most serious mental health conditions on the list. These patients need to be removed from their current environment right away and given intensive treatment to help them deal with the condition. These can last anywhere from a month to three months depending on the patient.
  2. Outpatient rehab: Most patients who suffer from a mental health condition will need to work with outpatient rehab. This is as simple as the patient sitting down with a trained therapist once or twice a week during therapy and then completing exercises given to them when they are at home. Most types of mental illness can be treated in this manner.
  3. Partial hospitalization: This is a combination of the two methods above. If the patient needs more treatment than what outpatient therapy can provide, but they do not need the full intensive inpatient rehab, it is possible that they will attend this option. This will include a good deal of their time, but can be an effective way to help deal with the condition.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment in Minnesota

Many patients who seek help for their mental illness will just need help with that one condition. They may work with a therapist, or even have inpatient rehab, to help with the specific issue they have with their mental health.

There are other patients who will suffer from not only a mental health condition, but also a drug or alcohol addiction. This can pose a serious of other issues along the way, which makes it difficult for the patient to recover if both conditions are not treated at once.

It is common for one of two things to happen when a dual diagnosis is necessary. First, the patient had a mental health condition that was left untreated for some reason. The symptoms were hard to work with, so they turned to drugs and alcohol to help them handle these issues. However, the substance ended up making things worse and caused a cycle that was hard for the patient to break.

The second possibility is that the patient utilized drugs and alcohol so much that the addiction caused a mental health illness to show up in the patient. No matter the case, the patient needs to consider the right treatment to help them handle both conditions, and this is known as dual diagnosis treatment. With the right facility providing the dual diagnosis to the patient, they will be able to recover from both and regain the full control over their lives that they want.

Which Mental Health Disorders Can be Treated in Minnesota?

Mental health services in Minnesota are some of the best in the country, which means that many patients are able to get the help they need with their mental illness whenever they seek this help out. There are many great options for mental health care in Minnesota, curing many types of mental health disorders for the patient. For example, patients can receive treatment for:

  1. Anxiety
  2. Minor and major depression
  3. ADHD
  4. Schizophrenia
  5. Eating disorders
  6. Bipolar disorder

The patient may start out with traditional therapy to evaluate their mental health condition and determine which of the treatment options are the best for them at the time. They can then work with mental health professionals to create a plan that fits their needs and will help them take charge of their mental health today.
